Babur in London

The Opera Group developed through the Incubator

28 March - 7 July 2012

Life is short; work is long.
Work is building an empire and a dynasty,
A place your people can call their own,
Making something that will live after you.

In a London suburb, four young men and women are preparing a terrorist act. As their mission draws closer they are disturbed by the ghost of Babur, first Mughal Emperor -poet and warrior. Challenging their convictions, he calls them ‘children playing in battle, in love with death‘, but what are his motives for interfering?

Babur in London tells a haunting story of four young people in today’s society grappling with their beliefs, the consequences of their actions, and their feelings for each other. The piece combines the contemporary poetry of Jeet Thayil with original music by Edward Rushton and will be directed by John Fulljames.

Bow Down

The Opera Group developed through the Incubator

17 May - 14 July 2012

The Opera Group in association with London Sinfonietta will present Bow Down in Summer 2012. This macabre folk tale, originally devised in 1977 by Harrison Birtwistle and Tony Harrison, Bow Down is redevised by Frederic Wake-Walker in his directorial debut for The Opera Group, and brought to percussive and visceral life by nine young interdisciplinary performers.

A Blind Harpist recounts a sinister tale of thwarted desire, unnatural betrayal and violent jealousy. When the Fair Sister is courted by the Suitor, the Dark Sister commits a terrible act of betrayal. As her crime echoes through the land and through the ages, so she receives bloody retribution in the parable’s brutal conclusion.

Evocative of the narratives of Grimm, Federico Garcia Lorca and Sarah Kane in its exploration of repression, sex and death, this ancient murder ballad – of which numerous variants exist in Britain, Scandinavia and America – is reimagined for a diverse contemporary audience.

Vivienne Franzmann: The Witness

Jerwood New Playwrights at The Royal Court

1 - 30 June 2012

'Sometimes when I think of going back. I feel like I could run there. It’s like I'm being called back. I know it sounds ridiculous. And sometimes I don't give a shit about any of it and I just want to stack shelves for the rest of my life.’

Captured in an award-winning shot Alex was rescued from Rwanda and adopted by the man behind the lens. Back from uni and returning to where she was raised the distance between father and daughter stretches taut. In the dark room of a Hampstead home a long hidden secret is slowly exposed in a flash of revelation.

Vivienne Franzmann’s new play is a piercing and dark thriller of modern morals.

Holly Pigott: The Prophet

Jerwood Young Designers at The Gate

14 June - 21 July 2012

It’s January 28th 2011 and Egypt stands on the brink. For three days the streets of Cairo have been pounded by the feet of thousands of protesters marching against the ossified, stagnant regime of President Hosni Mubarak. But for Layla and Hisham, a young couple living in downtown Cairo, a dictatorial and corrupt government is only one of their problems. As the world shifts, cataclysmically, around them, some long hidden secrets threaten to emerge and tear them apart.
Based on extensive interviews in Cairo with revolutionaries and soldiers, journalists and cab drivers, this new drama depicts both a revolution in progress and the society from which it sprang. By turns both funny and terrifying, it is written by award winning playwright Hassan Abdulrazzak and directed by the Gate Theatre’s Artistic Director Christopher Haydon.

Small Grants: PRSF 20x12

15 June 2012

Zatopek! is a 12 minute chamber opera by Emily Howard and Second Movement for baritone, mezzo, adult and youth chorus and mixed ensemble, inspired by legendary Czech Olympian, long distance runner Emil Zatopek (1922-2000). In 1954 Zatopek set a new world record for the 5000m running the distance in 13:57 minutes. Emily Howard and Second Movement will have just a little less time to celebrate his life and times from the starting pistol of his international breakthrough at the London 1948 Olympics to the final finish line.

Glyndebourne Festival 2012

This is a story of love and loss, of betrayal and deception, of sex and a city, of wounded pride and attempted retribution – of plumply inviting sofa cushions.

An original Glyndebourne commission, first presented as part of the Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme during the 2009 Festival, the cast features past and present members of the Glyndebourne Chorus.
